Too small for heart worm prevention

August 5, 2015, 2:59 PM
Q: What if my vet wont prescribe heartguard and nexguard because he says my pup is too small? 14weeks 1.75lbs
A: The good thing is the heart worm preventives work backwards, meaning when you give a dose you are canceling infections that have occurred in the last 6-8 weeks so you may still have time. I would ask the vet directly that since you are in a heart worm endemic area what alternatives he suggests for protection and what about splitting a dose?
