luxating patella

Q: We established the grade this morning with the vet. It's grade 3. My puppy can't walk at all right now. :( Thanks in advance for any advice.
A: The majority of grade 3 luxations do require surgery. The surgery is best if done after the puppy reaches skeletal maturity. We would usually recommend an anti-inflammatory and cage rest for several days to see if the puppies use improves but if it doesn't we sometimes have to go ahead with surgery.
