Breathing Funny While Sleeping

March 29, 2014, 9:48 PM
Q: We just brought our pup home this week. She is 11 weeks old; a cavachon. We have noticed that when she sleeps, she seems to be breathing extremely fast. Her little chest is moving very quickly. It's not all of the time and didn't happen after exercise. Its a little concerning to us. Is this normal? Eileen
A: If she seems normal the rest of the time I would not be concerned. Puppies have REM sleep just like we do and they experience all kinds of situations in dreams so changes in body movement, shining and rapid shallow breathing are just expressions of deep sleep.
