Appearance

The Pomapoo is a small toy-sized dog with an elegant and joyful appearance. They’re a cross between a Pomeranian and a Toy Poodle, which means they may resemble either parent or appear with a combination of features and traits from both. Depending on which parent’s coat they inherit, they can come in either the straight coat of the Pomeranian or the curly and non-shedding hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. Their size is generally very small. Being a mix of two toy dog breeds, Pomapoos will likely not exceed 8 to 10 inches in height and 8 to 10 pounds in weight.

The Pomapoo can have floppy, pointy, or slightly raised ears. Their eyes are colored black or hazel and they have long-to-narrow muzzles with white teeth that show when they are smiling.

The Pomapoos are small and compact, and their legs are built for moveability. They have strong back legs that help them jump around. Their paws have well-rounded pads on them which allow them to stay protected from hard surfaces.

Temperament

The Pomapoo temperament is kind and well-balanced. These dogs are known to be excellent companion pets for kids, given their love for games and adventures. They are great family dogs because they are not aggressive or reactive. They are not known to bite, growl, or attack, even when provoked, though they may bark occasionally.

Pomapoos are playful and energetic. They love swimming and playing in the water, much like their water-loving Poodle parent. This breed is quite intelligent and easy to train. Like the Pomeranian and Poodle, they love to please their owners and will do anything to achieve that goal.

These dogs are also very receptive to their owner’s wants and needs. They make fantastic therapy dogs given their high intelligence and sweet-natured personality.

Care

Grooming

Pomapoo grooming is easy to do and needs only a quick comb or brush every other day. A Pomapoo with a straight coat tends to shed more than one with a curly Poodle coat, so it’s important to brush or comb them daily if the coat is straight. A Pomapoo with a curly Poodle coat sheds very little if at all, and can be brushed every other day or twice every week.

They should be bathed no more than three or four times per year unless they get into something that requires more frequent baths. Some Pomapoos enjoy being bathed in the tub while others might not like it at all; it’s best to talk with your groomer before beginning any bathing routine at home.

Pomapoos are not an extremely high-maintenance breed of dog, but they do have some grooming requirements that need to be met on a regular basis. Regular brushing and nail trimming are two of the most important parts of grooming a Pomapoo.

Exercise Needs

Pomapoos are small toy-sized dogs. They don’t require much exercise, but they do enjoy walks and playing with their family. They love to snuggle up next to their owners as well as play with them. These dogs can also be stubborn at times, so training them is important.

They need about 30 minutes of exercise each day in order to stay healthy and happy. A walk around the block is usually enough for this breed. They love going on walks with their owners because they get to socialize with other people and make new friends along the way.

Health

Pomapoos are generally a healthy breed of dog. However, there are some conditions that are common in all small dogs. Some of these conditions can be avoided by taking care of your pup properly.

They have hybrid vigor which means they tend to have fewer genetic defects than purebred dogs because they are bred from different purebreds. This also means that their puppies are often healthier than other puppies that have the same breed of parents.

They may have cataracts and dental issues. This breed can also have weight gain problems due to its small size and lack of exercise. Other health concerns include ear infections, thyroid problems, or hip dysplasia.

Lifespan

The average lifespan of the Pomapoo is 12 to 14 years.  The oldest Poodle lived to the amazing age of 28 years old, while some Pomeranian dogs lived as much as 22 years. Naturally, the Pomapoos take after their parents in this aspect as well. They may live up to 20 years or more, granted they are cared for properly and raised in a loving environment.

Training

The Pomapoo is a small dog that is smart, a fast learner, and a people pleaser. This breed is eager to learn and responds very well to positive reinforcement. These pups respond well to reward-based methods and praise. They can be stubborn at times and may require patience when training.

They are very gentle dogs that are easygoing when it comes to training. They require some socialization training in order for them to get along with other dogs and animals. This breed also loves agility training. They love to run around outside and exercise as well as socialize with other pups at dog parks or doggy daycare centers.

The Pomapoo can have separation anxiety issues if left alone for long periods of time. In order for this breed not to suffer from this, they should not be left alone for more than two hours at a time.

History

The Pomapoo is a glamorous little designer puppy that is created by crossing a purebred Pomeranian and a purebred Toy Poodle. These little hybrids were created around 20 years ago in the United States when the designer puppy trend was at its peak. Breeders who took on mixing the two purebred dogs, envisioned a new type of breed with improved health, cuter looks, and better coat qualities.

Not much else is known about the Pomapoo as of yet since this breed is quite new. To understand why their parents were chosen for the mix, we can peek at their histories and personality types.

The Pomeranian dog is a friendly, small breed of Spitz. The lovely Pomeranian puppies we’ve come to know and love today are descended from larger sled dogs that originated in the Arctic region. These descendants arrived in Pomerania (region of Germany and Poland) centuries ago and were met with admiration by the local people there. Bred down in size through many generations by the Pomeranian folk, the enthusiastic dogs made their way from near the Baltic Sea all across Europe, onto the laps of kings and queens, and into our hearts by way of Queen Victoria.

The Poodle is a dog breed that has been known by many names, including Caniche, Pudelin, and Pudel. It is one of the most remarkable dog breeds in the world today. Originating from Germany, this highly in-demand breed has a history of fame throughout Europe, Australia, Asia, and the United States. They have been named the most fashionable pets of royalty, great circus performers, and excellent companion pets. Famous with traveling circuses, Standard Poodles were bred down to Miniature sizes for better handling and control before being bred down further to Toy sizes that would win over admirers with their adorableness. The ultimate "Einstein" dogs of the canine world, there are few breeds more popular than Poodles as companion pets around the globe.

Although the American Kennel Club recognizes their parent breeds, Pomapoos are not recognized by the club yet. The AKC currently only recognizes purebred dogs. Clubs that recognize this cute hybrid include the Designer Dog Registry, the American Canine Hybrid Club, and the International Designer Canine Registry.
