Appearance

Mini Goldendoodles have a stunning appearance that combines the most adorable features that Poodles and Golden Retrievers are loved for. Some of these dogs may inherit more Golden Retriever features and less from Poodles or the other way around, or they may appear with a look that combines equal features from their parents. Most often, they are a perfect combination of both.

When it comes to their size, Mini Goldendoodles can be larger or smaller depending on their generation and parents. A first-generation Mini Goldendoodle, which is a half and half mix of its parents, can weigh between 20 and 40 pounds, whereas an F1b can weigh as little as 15 pounds. There are also other size varieties in the Goldendoodle breed such as the Toy, Teacup, or Petite Mini Goldendoodle that usually weigh around 10-15 pounds at most full grown.

Mini Goldendoodles also come in a variety of gorgeous colors that include white, black, apricot, red, chocolate, and merle. White, black, and merle Mini Goldendoodles are generally very rare, whereas chocolate mini Goldendoodles are more commonly found.

Temperament

Mini Goldendoodles have a temperament much like that of their parents. They are calm and attentive like their Golden Retriever parent and as composed as their Poodle parent. These dogs aren’t known to be jumpy, shy, reserved, or aggressive, but they do require early socialization to ensure they grow up to be well-adjusted and well-behaved adult dogs.

When it comes to their humans, Mini Goldendoodles are 100% devoted. They form strong bonds with every family member and are always looking to be part of day-to-day family activities. Kids in the family are often their best friends given that they share the same love for games and other fun activities. They can be protective of their family members, but they mostly have gentle temperaments that don’t drive them to be aggressive towards others.

As far as their hobbies go, Mini Goldendoodles love to explore and be active in any way they can. They like to be close to their humans in whatever they do and are very fond of going on hikes and long walks. Puzzle games and Kong toys are one of their favorite forms of entertainment.

Care

Mini Goldendoodle Grooming

Grooming a Mini Goldendoodle is not a time-consuming activity, nor one that must be done daily. Depending on their coat type and daily routines, these dogs have minimal to low grooming requirements. An active dog that spends a lot of time outdoors might need to be brushed every other day to remove debris from the coat and bathed more frequently. Typically, an adult Goldendoodle mini requires a quick coat brushing every few days and a bath every month or so.

Mini Goldendoodles that are less active might need help trimming their nails, since less active dogs aren’t on the move enough to file their nails down naturally. You can opt to clip or file your dog’s nails when you start hearing clicking sounds every time they step. You will also need to check their ears for infection regularly and clean them with dog wipes or a wet cloth.

One of the most important aspects of grooming your Mini Goldendoodle is brushing its teeth. Like almost every dog breed, the miniature Goldendoodle can suffer from dental issues and periodontal disease. It is important that you brush your dog’s teeth as often as you can with vet-approved dog toothpaste and a toothbrush specifically designed for the size of your dog.

Mini Goldendoodle Exercise Needs

Although petite, Mini Goldendoodles have plenty of energy to go around. The like to be active and are an ideal breed for outdoorsy owners. Some of the breed’s favorite things to do are visiting the dog park where chases are plentiful, going on hikes with their owner, and playing Frisbee in a large, open field. Although their exercise needs differ from those of their larger counterparts, Mini Goldendoodles still require plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Two or three walks of a combined 30 to 60 minutes every day should be enough to help them burn any excess energy and allow them to keep fit and happy.

Mini Goldendoodle Health

Hybrid vigor is one of the greatest benefits of crossbreeding, and Mini Goldendoodles benefit from it plenty. As a half and half cross between a Golden retriever and a Poodle, the Mini Goldendoodle breed’s genetic make-up cancels out many health issues that are common in Poodles and Retrievers. Some conditions that can still occur include allergies, dental issues, hypothyroidism, cataracts, and ear infections. The Mini Goldendoodle breed is born from crossing two dogs that come from healthy lineages.

Mini Goldendoodle Lifespan

Like most small dog breeds, Mini Goldendoodles have a long life expectancy. They generally live healthy lives well into their teen years. The average lifespan of Mini Goldendoodles is between 14 and 16 years. Mini Goldendoodles have also been known to reach as much as 20 years. A safe and loving environment, regular checkups at the veterinarian, and a balanced lifestyle with enough exercise and a good diet will ensure that your dog lives a long and good life.

Mini Goldendoodle Training

Mini Goldendoodles, puppies and adults alike, are very smart dogs, as the reputation of their parents can attest. They are easily trained for therapy work and assisting/guiding jobs as well as for sporting competitions and entertainment. When training a Mini Goldendoodle puppy, it is beneficial to use a reward system tailored to their wants and needs. It is important to identify what your puppy loves most in terms of treats, toys, and praise. A gentle approach that shows patience and consistency will work best for these puppies. Mini Goldendoodles also need challenges to stimulate their intelligent minds, so puzzles are always a plus.

Socialization and leash training are very important when raising a Mini Goldendoodle puppy. They should be done early to ensure the puppy has enough time to learn before reaching maturity. Patience and motivation are required for both lessons.

Training methods that include shock collars, punishment, or yelling are not recommended for Mini Goldendoodle puppies. These methods are counterproductive as these dogs can become sensitive, shy, or frightened by harsh treatment and not respond.

History

The Goldendoodle breed is a designer crossbreed created in 1969 by crossing two dogs of a pure lineage – the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. Since its very first days, the Golden doodle proved to be a most remarkable breed that displayed the same characteristics as its parents. Goldendoodle breeders in the United States saw the potential in mixing the two breeds and began crossing purebred Poodles with Golden retrievers to create a hypoallergenic dog with guiding abilities. As the breed became more popular, especially with allergy sufferers, a miniature version of the Goldendoodle was created. Although the exact year when Mini Goldendoodles first appeared is unknown, their reputation is known to have been on a climb for over 20 years.

The main difference between Standard and Mini Goldendoodles is their size. Standards can reach as much as 90 pounds when fully grown, whereas Minis usually stop growing after 20-40 pounds.

Like their larger counterparts, Mini Goldendoodles can be found in three generations: F1, F1B, and F2. These generations have different sizes, characteristics, and qualities.

F1 Mini Goldendoodles are a half and half mix of a Golden Retriever and a Mini Poodle. These are called first-generation doodles and classic/regular Mini Goldendoodles. F1s have equal qualities inherited from their parents. They inherit some of the Poodle’s hypoallergenic qualities, as well as the Golden Retriever’s disposition for guiding and assisting. As first-generation hybrids, these dogs also benefit from hybrid vigor – they are healthier and less prone to certain health issues common in the Poodle and Golden Retriever breeds.

F1b (first-generation backcross or second-generation puppies) Mini Goldendoodles are the puppies of an F1 backcrossed with a Miniature Poodle. These dogs are 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. They are known for their excellent hypoallergenic coat qualities and very small size. Their appearance is a beautiful blend of their parents.

F2 Mini Goldendoodles are the third-generation crossbreed of this mix. They are the puppies of two Mini Goldendoodle dogs bred together. These dogs are bred for specific physical and personality traits. They are usually the smallest variety of the Mini Goldendoodle breed.
