Appearance

Havapoos are sweet-looking dogs that parade the world with their tails up and wagging and their expressions happy and eager. As a mix of two purebred dogs, the beyond cute Havapoos come with a lot of lovely mixed features. Among their most adorable features are their puffy and curled tails, adoring eyes, hanging ears, and tiny paws.

The little Havapoos take after their parents, sporting a small toy size. They stop growing once they reach 9-12 inches in height and 8-12 pounds in weight. The Havapoo size can have slight differences between puppies in the same litter. Toy and Teacup Havapoo adult dogs weigh less than 8 pounds.

The breeds that make up the Havapoo mix have slightly wavy to curly-textured coats, and, as the Havapoo puppies take after their parents, they may come in a combination of wavy to curly textures. They may also appear with patterns or markings that are common with the breeds of their parents. Havapoo colors include chocolate, black, blue, gray, apricot, white, silver, brown, gold, and cream.

Temperament

Havapoos are wonderful dogs in every aspect. Their temperaments are calm, they show excellent behavior around other small animals and children, and they are immensely affectionate. Even though they enjoy being around their owners, getting attention, and being pampered all the time, the Havapoos are not the type of dogs that need to always have someone around them.

The little Havapoos get their independent nature from both of their parents. Another amazing quality these little dogs inherit from their parents is their ability to sense when someone needs cheering up. Since the Poodle and the Havanese have played the role of therapy dogs for over a century, they have both developed a gift for knowing when their owner’s mood shifts and when it needs adjusting.

The Havapoos are also great pets when it comes to families with children. Not only are they gentle, playful, and patient, but also quite entertaining for the whole family. The cute Havapoos are famously known for using their adorable tricks and antics to get what their heart desires most – attention.

Care

Havapoo Grooming

Havapoos have medium to low grooming requirements. Because they are a curly-haired dog breed, their coats can get tangled up or even matted if they are not frequently brushed. It is recommended to brush them 2 or 3 times every week. If your dog is a fan of splashing happily in dirty puddles, it is best to bathe them after they indulge in this hobby, otherwise it is recommended to give them a bath once every four to six weeks. Their nails should be clipped if they tend to overgrow, and their ears should be checked and cleaned regularly. Supply your dog with plenty of dental sticks to chew on and brush its teeth frequently to avoid dental decay.

Havapoo Exercise Needs

Havapoo dogs don’t have particularly high exercise needs, although they might indulge in more active days every now and then. Usually, these small dogs require up to 40 minutes or an hour of daily exercise which should include at least two walks and a few minutes of active playtimes indoors. They love occasional beach walks and swimming as well as games of fetch and dog Frisbee. Dog parks where they can interact with other dogs and be enticed in a friendly chase are also a great way of exercising Havapoos.

Havapoo Health

Thanks to hybrid vigor, which is developed as a result of mixed gene pools, Havapoos are a healthy dog breed. They are not likely to inherit conditions that are common with their parents, and they live long, healthy lives. Some conditions that are rare but still possible within the breed include allergies, dental issues, obesity, and ear infections.

Havapoo Lifespan

Havapoos have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years and a life expectancy of 14 years. Although 14 years is common for Havapoo dogs, there are some within the breed that live longer. Good dog food, enough exercise, and kept appointments at the vet will give your fur baby the best chance to live a longer and healthier life.

Havapoo Training

Havapoos are clever and brilliant little puppies from very early on. Being half Poodle and half Havanese, gives them a higher intelligence than most dogs benefit from. Both the Poodle and the Havanese are considered two of the smartest dogs in the world, and naturally, the Havapoo puppies are equipped to join their ranks. Havapoo puppies love to learn anything they are taught. Tricks are their favorite thing to learn, especially if they get them the attention and rewards they crave. To get the best results when training your Havapoo puppy, it is best to use a gentler approach and have plenty of delicious treats on hand. Their favorite toys can also motivate them to perform, although they are much more responsive to treats and praise.

To win at leash training your Havapoo puppy, it’s best to begin accustoming your pup with its collar and leash indoors, well before your first outdoor walk together. Leave the leash casually laying around the house where your puppy can sniff and accept it as part of the décor. Once the leash becomes of little importance, you can place it around your puppy’s neck and allow your puppy time to become comfortable with it. Once your Havapoo puppy is ok with wearing the leash, you can begin walking around the house and practicing commands.

History

Havapoo puppies were first designed and created by American breeders during the 1990s. As the designer dog trend took off during the 80s, there appeared more and more demand for diversity in dog breeds. The Havapoo puppies were, and still are, created by crossing two purebred dogs – the Havanese with a Miniature or Toy Poodle.

Both the Havanese and Poodle are old breeds in the world of dogs. They have been around for centuries, playing big parts in furthering the need for dog companionship. Miniature and Toy-sized Poodles were selected for the Havapoo mix for their great minds, beautiful curls, and loyalty, while the Havanese were selected for their excellent nature and sweet personalities.

As the Havapoo breed became increasingly popular, Havapoo breeders took to creating more size variations like the Teacup, Toy, and Micro Teacup Havapoo puppies. Havapoos, regardless of their size, are now known worldwide for their perfect hypoallergenic qualities, teddy bear-like appearance, and liveliness.
