I'm Too Excited To Eat!
I'M TOO EXCITED TO EAT!
YOUR NEW PUPPYS' ARRIVAL AT HOME IS EXCITING-- AND STRESSFUL. EVEN THOUGH WE ARE PROVIDING A WARM, COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT WITH EVERYTHING OUR NEW BABY NEEDS, IT IS STILL A CHANGE AND IT IS STILL A STRESS. MANY PUPPIES ARE JUST TOO EXCITED TO EAT. NEW SIGHTS, SMELLS AND PLAYMATES CAN BE DISTRACTING AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT YOUR PUPPY IS HEADED FOR TROUBLE.
BEFORE BRINGING YOUR NEW PUPPY HOME BE SURE TO PICK UP
DANNON ACTIVIA VANILLA YOGURT
CEASERS PINK LABEL CANNED PUPPY FOOD
CHICKEN BABY FOOD
ROTISSERIE CHICKEN
PEPTO BISMOL LIQUID
KARO SYRUP
( WATCH DOCTORPUPS "WHAT SHOULD I HAVE READY TO BRING MY PUPPY HOME?"VIDEO)
ON ARRIVAL
PUPPIES UNDER 2 POUNDS REQUIRE SPECIAL CARE UPON ARRIVAL AND FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS IN THEIR NEW HOME. AS SOON AS YOUR PUPPY ARRIVES OFFER 1/2 TEASPOON YOGURT, OR IF NOT TAKEN VOLUNTARILY, ADMINISTER 2-3CC(ML) WITH A SYRINGE. CONTINUE THIS 3-4 TIMES AN HOUR FOR THE FIRST 2 HOURS. ALSO MAKE CEASERS CANNED FOOD, CHICKEN BABY FOOD OR WARMED CHICKEN AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS FOR YOUR PUPPY TO EAT. ANY COMBINATION OF THESE FOODS THAT HE WILL EAT IS FINE. TO GUARD AGAINST HYPOGLYCEMIA ( LOW BLOOD SUGAR) GIVE KARO SYRUP------ 1CC(ML) PER POUND OF BODY WEIGHT DRIBBLED INTO THE MOUTH---- EACH 4 HOURS IN FOOD OR BY SYRINGE. CONTINUE THIS UNTIL YOUR PUPPY IS EATING WELL AT LEAST 6 TIMES A DAY. (WATCH DOCTOPUPS "HYPOGLYCEMIA" VIDEO FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION)
ESPECIALLY WITH EXTENDED TRAVEL AND ALL THE EXCITEMENT LITTLE PUPPIES OFTEN GET "TUMMY UPSETS" AND SPIT UP BROWN OR YELLOW FLUID.
WHAT TO DO
GIVE 1/2CC(ML) PEPTO BISMOL ------- WAIT 15 MINUTES. IF YOUR PUPPY DOESN'T THROW UP THEN GIVE 3CC(ML) BABY FOOD OR YOGURT 2-3 TIMES AN HOUR FOR 2 HOURS.
IF YOUR PUPPY VOMITS THE FOOD
WAIT 15 MINUTES----REPEAT THE PEPTO BISMOL THEN WAIT 45 MINUTES AND RESUME FEEDING BABY FOOD OR YOGURT TWICE AN HOUR FOR 8 HOURS. YOUR PUPPYS' STOMACH SHOULD THEN BE SETTLED DOWN AND HE SHOULD BE WILLING TO EAT REGULARLY ON HIS OWN. IF YOUR PUPPY IS NOT WILLING TO EAT OR CONTINUES TO VOMIT YOU SHOULD CONTACT A VETERINARIAN.
"I'M TOO EXCITED TO EAT" IS A COMMON SITUATION BUT YOU CAN MINIMIZE THE DANGER BY FOLLOWING THESE GUIDELINES AND LIMITING PLAY TO 15-20 MINUTE SESSIONS ENDING WITH AN OFFERING OF FOOD AND WATER. LET YOUR PUPPY REST AND SLEEP BEFORE THE NEXT PLAY PERIOD BEGINS.
